Overview

This is a winter Spiti itinerary designed for the Shimla side, where roads usually remain open (with occasional snow blocks), giving you frozen landscapes, snow‑dusted villages and very cold but dramatic conditions. You start with an overnight Volvo to Shimla, then shift into the mountains properly as you drive via Narkanda towards Sarahan/Jeori, where the vibe becomes more rural and pine‑forest dominated.

From here the roads carve along the Sutlej valley towards Kalpa and Chitkul, with apple orchards, river views and classic Kinnaur architecture starting to show up in almost every frame. Chitkul, famous as “India’s last village” on the old Hindustan–Tibet route, sits by the Baspa river, surrounded by snow‑clad peaks, wooden houses and incredibly clean mountain air, making it perfect for slow walks and riverside shoots.

Kalpa is a calmer base village overlooking the dramatic Kinner Kailash range, known for its apple orchards and changing colours on the peaks through the day, so sunrise and sunset here are visually rich. Driving from Kalpa to Tabo, the greenery slowly gives way to stark, rugged mountain walls, with halts at Khab Sangam where the Sutlej meets the Spiti river, and the still waters of Nako Lake tucked against the hillside.

Tabo and Dhankar monasteries add a deep cultural layer: Tabo is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas, while Dhankar is dramatically perched on a cliff, giving sweeping views of the valley below. Kaza acts as your main hub in Spiti, from where you explore Kee monastery, the photogenic Chicham bridge, and the trio of high‑altitude villages Langza, Hikkim and Komic, each offering different perspectives of the same vast valley.

Langza is known for its giant Buddha statue and fossil‑rich slopes, Hikkim for the “world’s highest post office”, and Komic for its ancient Tangyud monastery and “highest village” tag, all set against big‑sky, lunar‑like landscapes.

The return from Kaza retraces the Spiti and Kinnaur valleys back to Kalpa, giving you a second chance at clear views of Kinner Kailash or backup shoots if earlier days had bad weather. From Kalpa you descend to Shimla, get dropped at the ISBT with some free time in town, and then board the evening Volvo back to Delhi, closing the loop from high desert back to plains overnight.
